Salt Flats Elopement

The Bonneville Salt Flats are one of the most picturesque spots in Utah. Because it’s so popular, I photograph several shoots there each year, but this Salt Flats Elopement from October of 2022 definitely takes the cake.

Chiaki and Kevin

Chiaki and Kevin have been together for about 6 years already. Raising 6 kids together as well, a big ceremony just wasn’t their vibe. So when they said they wanted to elope at the Bonneville Salt Flats with just their officiant and two friends to be witnesses, I was all in. It was a perfect day for an elopement. Clear skies, light breeze, and the perfect temperature. To start off their ceremony they read their personalized vows to each other out of the cutest custom vow books.

Their ceremony was short and sweet, but clearly long awaited for these two. As they read their vows to each other there wasn’t a dry eye around, myself included.

Finally after 6 years together, they were married!

After the ceremony, we spent some time taking photos and videos, documenting the day for their family and friends who weren’t with them. As they walked on the salted ground, both of exuded an air of calm and confidence. They walked hand in hand together, enjoying the sunset, their first as a married couple.

They drove home that night as a married couple. It was such an honor to be part of their intimate elopement, and to capture the moments they’ll remember forever. Experiencing these smaller, more private weddings is always such a good reminder of how unique this job is. I capture people’s most important and defining life moments as a stranger. I was one of 5 total people who witnessed Chiaki and Kevin’s salt flats elopement, and I did so as the least known person to them, while simultaneously being one of the most important parts of their day: the documenter.
