When Claire and Trevor reached out to me for their engagement photos, they said they wanted a breathtaking, and one of a kind location. And several national parks were on their list, but Joshua Tree engagement photos were too hard to pass up! And who can blame them? Joshua Tree National Park is one of the most beautiful places to take photos.
Joshua Tree National Park is located in southern central California, just east of Palm Springs, California. In recent years Joshua Tree has become a popular destination for photography, especially elopements. And for good reason! The park is relatively small compared to many other National Parks, and has a wild, exciting look. Speckled with large rock formations and thousands of the iconic Joshua trees, it’s a rugged and picturesque spot for those wildly in love with each other and nature.
National Parks can be tricky with photography sessions. The recent increases in the amount of people photographing professionally in National Parks has lead to many parks requiring permits and fees for photography sessions of any kind. But currently Joshua Tree only requires permits for weddings and photography workshops involving several photographers or any kind of “set up”. So Joshua tree engagement photos or formal sessions do not require a permit! For more info or to apply for a permit for your elopement in Joshua Tree, click the button below!
All of Joshua Tree is beautiful, but there are some spots that provide different looks for photos within the park. Hidden Valley has one of the highest concentrations of Joshua Trees in the park. But if you’re looking for more rock formations, you’ll be better served by Live Oak or Skull Rock. And of course the main park road is an amazing look for photos.
Claire and Trevor embraced the desert look with lots of vibrant colors. They started out with Claire in a white, tulle dress and Trevor in a striped multi-color and button-down shirt. Perfect for making them stand out against the neutral colors of the park.
I encourage all my couples to bring two outfits to their engagement sessions. One that’s more dressy and one that’s more casual. So after wandering around the desert for a little while, Claire and Trevor changed into a less formal outfit, and allowed us to be more adventurous in our posing.
One thing Claire requested was photos on the main road of the park. And her light-wash jeans and Trevor’s black denim were the perfect combo for this photo! Right as we got to the perfect spot for the road photos, the sun started to dip below the horizon. And it gave us the most beautiful golden sunset lighting. The rays of shadows created by the Joshua Tree behind them are so beautiful!
Claire and Trevor’s Joshua Tree engagement photos are some of my absolute favorite I’ve taken this year! So if you’re interested in scheduling your own Joshua Tree Photoshoot, use the button below to get in touch!
